Things are Still Going Well

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to check in and let everyone know that Grandma is still doing exceptionally well. Although she still lacks the strength in her right leg, her right arm is showing great progress. That's not to say that she is not doing well with her right leg.

Doing great

Sorry that there hasn't been any updates for a few days. However, mom is doing great, and her physical and speech therapies are comming along fine. She's had great progress with both. I did make good on a promise to mom tonight by bringing her some of my home cooked collared greens tonight. She did enjoyed them and gave me several good complements. Also, several other family members enjoyed the collared greens also. Mom is really ready to come home, and knows that it won't be too long before that will be happening. God Bless you all, and good night!

New Picture of Grandmommy

For those that don't have Facebook...

Here is a copy  of a beautiful picture uploaded Sunday (10/9/2011) of Grandmommy.

 Looking Good Grandmommy!

I'm here... Thank Goodness for Uncle Spencer

Miss you guys. I hope all is well.

Haven't been online in a while just trying to catch up on a lot of things. Goodness knows what would of happened to this ol' blog if it wasn't for Uncle Spencer. Thank You so much for helping out and keeping things going for me. It is soooo appreciated. I have been able to get things back in order and can now focus again on the simpler things of life...Blogging! LOL

As Uncle Spencer has stated the new place Grandmommy is in is awesome. They noticed that we are a LARGE group and from what I was told, more than willing to accommodate us. They offered us use of a large private room with TV and plenty sitting areas for the entire family. It feels like gathering in a family room as instead of visiting a hospital.

As far as Grandmommy's progress is going... She is doing wonderfully! Her right hands moves all the time now. I notice it lifting and reaching out to everyone as she greets them. It may not always make it up, but the movement is there and that shows great progress.  She even told me once (this was awhile back)  that she moves it a lot without even realizing it. Few days ago, I glanced over once or twice while someone was showing her pictures and noticed her using her right hand to kinda point at the picture.

Another favorite moment of mine was the first night (maybe second night)she arrived. It was late, Grandmommy was ready for bed. They took her to her room and got her into the bed. I had said good night before she left the "family room" but had  ran to her new room  to sneak a few more kiss before leaving. When I got there she was tucked in bed comfortably. I waited my turn to steal more kisses, as others had had the same idea. I got my hug and kiss and told her "I love you". As I was heading towards the door I turned back towards Grandmommy and there she was, looking like an angel,  blowing kisses with her right hand!  Once again, she completely stole my heart as if she didn't already have it. God is so good. It's little moments like that, that I will cherish forever.

I hope to visit Grandmommy again tonight since I was unable to make it last night as planned. One word, "Homecoming"...anyone with a teenage daughter in high school may feel my pain!!!

So Until Next Time,
Be Safe and Stay Blessed,
Carmen

Visits

Mom had another day of plenty of visits from family and friends on Saturday! She had 3 members of her church, who are dear friends to visit with her, and 21 family members, all on the same day. The 21 family members were all there at the same time. What a blessing! She shared equal time with us all; sons, daughters, nieces and all! We all enjoyed our time with her once again. Her therapy is going well. Much improvement has come about. Before we know it, she'll be leaving to go home. I know that she can hardly wait for that day to come.

New place of care

Mom is enjoying her new place for her physical therapy. This place is definately a 5 star facility. Mom's room number is 113. Also, because we are such a large family, they have given us a large room so we can all visit with mom at the same time. This room does not have a number, but it's to the right of room number 142. The room is really great, and even has a Baldwin piano in it! It'a nice living room setting. Take care and God Bless!

Winning

Mom is winning the fight with her physical therapy! She had another wonderful day. Several of us family members were there with her this evening, and had a very joyous time with her. She is definately winning! As stated yesterday, she'll be leaving NRH this Friday! Will keep you posted on the new location for further therapy which is for 3 weeks, and then she gets to go home! What a blessing! Amazing Grace! God is so good! God Bless each and everyone of you and thanks for your show of love, kind words, thoughts, and prayers!

Grandmommy Says Hi, y'all

Beautiful & Strong as Ever!
She is really showing off here. Look at how high she is raising her right arm! As Uncle Spencer said, "Amazing Grace!"

One step closer to home...

Got the news today that Grandmommy will be moving to a nursing home October 7th. This is not a long-term nursing home but one that will be short term and I assume help her get back to living on her own.

Doing it on my own

Mom has been doing quite a bit more on her own. This morning she got out of bed under her own power. The doctor was so amazed that he told her that she was trying to get rid of him. LOL! However, he was clapping and singing her praises! Such progress is truly great. There was a lot of family there once again. Margie had spent the night with mom, and will be spending tonight with her also.

Amazing Grace

Today, visiting my mom after work was another wonderful experience. Carmen and I met once again at Brooklyn metro station. Mom was setting up and having the time if her life, communcating with her family.

Grace, family and friends

This evening mom had a host of family and friends visiting her. She even got to see her new grandson.  Mom is doing very well. Her physical therapy today was short, but sweet.

Piggy-Backing on Uncle Spencer's 9/27/2011 Posting

Thanks Uncle Spencer for the updates. I fell asleep much sooner than normal. I never even got my laptop out the bag to check email or do anything.

Piggy-backing on what Uncle Spencer said, Grandmommy looked great. For lack of a better word, she was glowing. She was happy. Alert. and full of laughs.

So let me tell you about my favorite part of the evening. As Uncle Spencer said, when we cam in Grandmomy was eating. For whatever reason she started coughing,  albeit it was a little cough, nothing alarming, just a cough. Maybe something got caught in her thoat, when down the wrong way, whatever the case my be. So I'm watching her. Uncle Wayne is standing in front of her, asking Grandmommy if she wants something to drink.  As she is coughing, what do I see moving on her right side?...her FRIEND!!!  YES, Grandmommy's right arm came up just as nice to cover her mouth. I don't even think she realized it! It was one of those moves that you do without thinking and most people don't notice until the person coughing don't do it...LOL!  I didn't say anything, didn't want to distrub her eating any more than it had been. That was the highlight of my evening.

As always, its just the little things that make such a big differnce. Small movements like that, shows great progress.  More importantly, shows that Grandmommy is winning this battle

Well, Gotta run. heading out to Meet my traveling buddy. Will try to post again tonight!

Until Then,
Be Safe and Stay Blessed,
Carmen

9/27/11

Carmen and I went again, together to visit with mom after work today. Wayne was assisting mom with her dinner, even though she was feeding herself. Her therapy is still going well. Unfortunately, Carmen and I had to leave much earlier tonight than we wanted to.

9/26/11 update

My visit with mom was very nice because , it was only 2 other family members there instead of 10 or more. This means that I did not have to share my time with her as much! Priceless!! Anyway we all had
a wonderful time with mom, and enjoyed much laughter from mom's great sense of humor. She was indeed in rare form! Also, got some great cooking tips on how to make applesauce quick, easy and turns out tasty.

Short Visit

Finally got my lazy butt off the couch and went to the hospital to kiss my Grandmommy goodnight. Got there about 8:20p and she was already in bed as expected. When I walked into the room it looked as though she was sleeping well, but when she hear my voice (even though I was trying to talk quietly) she woke up. I asked her how she was doing and she said, "good". She looked good. Tired, but she still looked good. We talked a little while about her day.. I didn't want to keep her up so I only stayed about 20 minutes and left when everyone else did.

Here With Grandmommy...She is showing off again!

Ok, so I was only in the door 5 minutes and Grandmommy had her right hand fully open, clapped both hands together and moved them both up in the air several times!!! WOW!!! What awesome progress in just two days.

Feels like forever...

Yeaahhh. I'm headed up today to see Grandmommy soon. It's been two days and I'm dying to see for myself how much she has progressed. I heard that she is doing well and therapy is going well but there is nothing like seeing it for myself.

Busy Day - Great Progress

Grandmommy and I have been on the move since this morning. They are really taking good care of her and making sure she is getting back on track.  Her second therapy session went wonderfully. I watched in amazement as she showed (off :)  full range of movement and and hi-fives with her right arm. When we came back to the room we tried to watch, "Driving Miss Daisy" but more visitors arrived. Before you knew it, it was time for her 3rd and last therapy session for the day.

Again, Grandmommy showed off. They was helping her to stand. I heard one of the nurses say she is doing much better than she was just two days ago. She said Grandmommy was finding her center better. Looked like Grandmommy stood a few inches taller with pride when she said that...LOL.  Before finishing up for the day, they had Grandmommy try to take a few steps. There was a bit hesitation. But before you know it Grandmommy was taking those first few steps. She got all the way up to 5 steps like they asked ---GREAT JOB GRANDMOMMY!!!  Grandmommy was so happy and excited that she gave the lady a hi-five with her right hand with what seemed like little effort...It took all I had not to cry like a proud parent when I saw that....LOL.

It has been a good day. We are getting use to the new roommate and the adjustments that is coming with it.
So from here on out it should be fairly quiet. No more meeting. As they switch nurses, they are coming in and introducing themselves. But that's it for the rest of the day. Soon visiting hours will be over and Grandmommy will be tucked back in bed, getting rest for another busy day.

I will be back tomorrow after work as usual.
Until then be safe and stay blessed.

Carmen

New Roommate arriving now

Grandmommy is getting a roommate! She is moving in now.

....will post updates about other therapy soon.

Early Bird Gets the Worm...

Grandmommy was not kidding when she said that they get her up early... Wow! Busy morning, but everything went well. She feed herself breakfast and then washed up to get dressed. The morning nurse also helped Grandmommy with balancing as she got dressed. I could hear lots and lots of  praises and she was happy about how strong she was when moving around.

Currently she is doing speech therapy. Today they are working on reading medicine labels. That seems to be going well. I can hear a few difficulties but the nurse doesn't sound too too concerned. Her next appointment is not until later, so Grandmommy is taking a nap. ...Hey Look, a visitor...her nap will continue later.

Will keep you posted as long as I'm here... Until then,
Be safe and Stay Blessed.

Carmen

Still Here...

Visiting hours are over. Grandmommy is sleeping peacefully. So I thought, what the heck, might as well post something since I have nothing but time tonight.

So today, Grandmommy got some "ME Time". To my surprise, when we arrived , only the nurses were in the room with her. That was about 6pm-ish. Normally there is at least 1 other family or friend visiting. When asked about her day, Grandmommy said she had a few phone calls; couple family members and a some friends. But for the most part is had been a quiet day. She said the most quiet day since she arrive.  I asked Grandmommy how her therapy went today, she said, "it went good", they had her moving things around. Then, we talked about the  news, how fast technology is moving..small talk for a while. She had a few more phone calls and another visitor. Before visiting hours were over, you could tell Grandmommy was ready for bed. She had mentioned earlier, that they get her up pretty early.  Not long after everyone had left, Grandmommy was in bed gettin' her beauty sleep.

Every day I see her, she is making more and more progress. Today I noticed that her right arm seemed to be moving a little more than yesterday. Nothing drastic, I didn't even think much about it until I saw her pulling the blankets up over her shoulders. It's the little things that makes me smile :)

So ending on a wondful note, I wish you all well, until we meet again,
Be Safe and Stay Blessed!

PS...Sorry Christine.....her room# is 321

Day 1 of Therapy...by Dwight

I am here right now at the NRH with mom and she is doing great. Today began her first day of physical, speech, and occupational rehab. She took it all in like a pro. Three hours of work out a day. She is doing one hour with each. The physical workout is the hardest. They are working with her on standing and trying to strengthen the right side of her body. She stood up today with assistance from the therapist and even once really erect. Her speech is great! They asked questions that she had previously gotten incorrect and today she got them right. "do you eat the banana before you peel it" She got it right along with all the others. She breezed thru the occupational rehab as well. She used her good hand and arm to exchange cups of water. She did a remarkable job even by the standards of all of the therapist. Mom never showed signs of tiring.

All and all it has been a great day. We are watching the news. She feed herself dinner and lunch. Keep the faith.

Dwight

On my way to hospital

Can't wait to see Grandmommy. Will confirm room number when we get there.

Start of a New Week

I pray everyone had a wonderful weekend. Took a break this weekend from posting. Just need a few days to get things together at home. It worked; I was able to get a lot done. Now I'm refreshed, more or less and back in the posting business.

Nightly Update

My Grandmommy is such an amazing woman. When I grow up, I only pray that I have half as much strenght as she does. She has overcome so much and her spirits continue to be so high and strong that you cant help but be in good spirits around her. She is so amazing, words just cannot say how proud I am of her and how proud I am to be her grandchild. And my family...I don't even know where to begin with them. Let's just say I am proud to be in the GREENE family. ... They are just amazing! Even with all the hiccups that comes with having a large family, I wouldnt have it any other way.

    Update about Grandmommy's Move

    Message Recieved at 12:45p.

Good morning.  Mom will be moved to National Rehabilitation Hospital either today or Monday.  Making great strides.  Her body is weak but her mind is strong.

     Here is what I found:
     National Rehabilitation Hospital

    Guestbook Created

Everyday before I leave work I will print out any new posting. I have already brought the card to put the print out in for today so send all the love and well wish you want and I will make sure grandmommy gets it when go to the hospital this evening and every evening there is new postings.

It wasn't as hard to create as I thought.  Check it out and let me know what you think.

Below is the link to sign Grandmommy's Guestbook:
    http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeyvy1v/id25.html

Possible Guest Book Page for Leaving Messages for Grandmommy

My plan for today is to TRY and create a guest book so that I can have one central location that everyone can leave a message for grandmommy.  My though is that it will make it easier for me print out daily and give to her.

I'm up for any suggestions from all my progammer buddies out there..... (crickets)

Will let you know how well it works out...It's just a thought I had last night and again when I saw the messag posted by "I'm Free". So I'm gonna put my skills to work and make it do what it do!

    Nightly Update

As I head off to bed just wanted to post a little bit more for everyone that I couldn't get out on my phone.

As I said, Grandmommy was moved to another room. Someone noticed that the visiting hours was only until 8pm! I'm not sure, I didn't see the sign but I will look for it tomorrow and confirm.

The room that she is in now is a bit bigger but she has a roommate. Not sure how that is gonna work out since Grandmommy has a lot of traffic going in and out her room (yall know we a BIG family, and no body wants to leave her side until they kick us out...lol). WE are gonna give those poor people a headache I sure... LOL but hopefully all the laughter and love that comes from her visitors will be received well by her roommate. The only saving grace is that I think they still have the same rule where only 2 people are allowed in the room at one time....smh...We will see.

Someone is staying with her tonight (not really sure if its an overnight stay but they get to stay after closing). Grandmommy is really happy about this.

Oh, I heard that Grandmommy is no longer on an IV. The only thing that she is connected to is the monitors. Progress...Progress... PROGRESS...God is so good. She is getting stronger every time I see her.  Her therapy is going well. It's gonna be a long process but Grandmommy is so strong I know she will be kicking butt and taking names in no time.

Gotta work tomorrow and then will head over to the hospital. Hopefully I will have better luck with getting a signal so that I can post updates earlier than today.  Will also try to get a few pictures posted too.

    Till tomorrow, Good night.

    New room number

C6 107 is grandmommy's new room number. We are ready to head home til tomorrow.

    At hospital

Grandmommy is still doing so well Got here about 4pm. Gave everyone a hug and went back to see grandmommy. She was sitting in her chair and not on the hospital bed.

Here it is after 8p amd I'm just geting this crazy phone to let me post. Well I guess its allows me to add a bit more without having to create a new posting.

Anywho, as I said earlier grandmommy is doing well. Sitting up, alert, talking and laughing.

Seems as though they are gonna move her to a new room soon. Will keep you posted on her new rom number.

    Headed to hospital.

Just left BWI marc station. Should be there soon. Carmesha is with me. She is supper excited to finally see grandmommy and the rest of the family. This will be her first time meetng Aunt Marjorie!!! Wow!! I don't know who is more excited me or her!

I brought my REAL camera today so hopefully I will get more pictures uploaded soon for everyone.

    September 14, 2011 Updates...I'm Here!!! I'm HERE!

Grand mommy is still doing so good. Even though I was only in the room for about 10 minutes (long enough to shove some food in my mouth), she seems to be more alert then yesterday. Bunch of family is here. So since Uncle Dwight has been here, I'm gonna let him take over and give the updates for Grand mommy...He dont know this right now since he's currently on the phone but I'm putting the computer in he lap now....

Dwight here.  Mom is doing remarkable.  Today we laughed and joked like old times.  Her girlfriend from church came to see her and that made her happy.  Her other church family came and that too made her very happy.  I don't have on my glasses so I hope that this is all in the right place. The real news is she is dong great and speaking well.

    Excitement

I'm happy to leave work everyday, but now it's even better because I know that I'm going to see my grandmommy and a lot of other family members. Family is so important and I just love how we always come together whether it's good or bad.

In about 10 minutes or so I'm going to meet Uncle Spencer at Union Station and then take the bus to the hospital. Hopefully within the next few hours I will be able to send an update on how grandmommy is doing.

Might even try to take some pictures. I will ask and see - no promise though (wink ;)

    Until then....

    Christmas in April

Just got a call from my mother...
Christmas in April will be Renovating Grand Mommy's House!!!!

They are going to be calling my mom back in a few days to let her know when they will be out to get started.   From what I was just told, my mom put in the application with Chirstmas in April awhile ago and just recently all the paper work was finished.

Of course, I will keep you posted about the progress.

    September 13, 2011 Email Update

It was so wonderful to see Grandmommy up and so alert today. She was talking and laughing and just being the wonderful woman that I know and love. Her speech was very clear; I could understand every word. When I got there, she was just finishing her lunch/dinner. I sneaked in stole a kiss and then the nurses came in. So I left back out for a few.

When I was able to get back in her room again, I was with Aunt Marjorie. She, Grandmommy and I just talked and talked. Grandmommy said, she was enjoying the conversation with two beautiful women (teary eyed) when Uncle Wayne came in and asked how she was doing. Eventually I had to play nice and allow someone else to come back (but not without a lot of pouting…lol). So I left and then went down to get something to eat in the cafĂ© across the street. They have GOOD food there.

So until I left at about 8:30p I was able to peak my head in a few more times and sneak a kiss. Before I left I was able to get some more information about Grandmommy’s condition. Here is what I know. Not complete but its what I know.

From my posting yesterday about the heart attack. The doctor said that when he/she was looking at the CAT scan they noticed a minor heart attack. No damages was noticed and they expect Grandmommy to make a full recovery.

This morning, another doctor said that they notice her heart flutters and want to watch that. She will need to see a heart doctor and most likely will need to take heart medicine.

The speech therapist is very happy with her progress and says she is doing good. Oh and she asked that famous question: “Where is my pocketbook?” LOL Yup. Grandmommy is doing much better.

Oh last but not least, Grandmommy does not need to be in the ICU anymore. They want to move her out but they do not have any rooms available and do not foresee any becoming available. They said that if they don’t get a room in a couple days, they may transfer her to another hospital. Will keep everyone updated about any transfers.

Well that’s all I have until tomorrow. If anyone has any thing to add, or any corrections to my information please let me know.

Previous Updates From Georgetown Care Page

Here are post that was send out previously:

I spent the evening at the hospital with Grandmommy. She is progressing wonderfully. She recognized me and called my name when I came in to her room.
I heard that she also had a mild heart attact. Will try to get more information about that tomorrow.

OH, and Grandmommy had a surprise visitor: Aunt Marjorie!!!!
What a wonderful surprise for everyone.

    Information from the Neurologist
    Posted 2 days ago
Paraphrase from a message received at 11:10pm
    9/11/2011

Grace’s stroke was on the left side of her brain therefore it affected the right side. For the most part it was a big stroke. The Neurologist did see a small area of concern with a little bit of bleeding but nothing that is over worrying her. The left side of the brain controls speech and that’s why Grace’s speech was off a
little. Grace will be meeting with a Speech Therapist as part of her rehab.
